Turning a challenging rebuild into a seamless flooring success (Carters Prestige Ltd & Kelmore Case Study)

Customer: Private Client

Timeframe: 3 days

Sector: Domestic

Products used: PrimeMore CS, LevelMore Flex&Fibre

The project: Following a structural failure during underpinning works, the property required a full rebuild. After experiencing poor workmanship earlier in the project, the client placed a strong emphasis on quality materials and a dependable installation process for the flooring stage.

Why were these Kelmore products used: Upon initial inspection of the newly installed slab, it was believed that a cement-based pump screed had been used. However, further assessment confirmed the substrate was in fact calcium sulphate.

The client was advised on appropriate drying times, with additional plastering works scheduled prior to installation. The team carried out a pre-installation visit to assess moisture levels and ensure the screed was suitably prepared. Fortunately, the existing screed had already had its laitance removed, allowing it to dry effectively and making it suitable for further treatment.

Given the previous issues on the project, a thorough and methodical approach to inspection, planning, and product selection was essential. Site logistics also presented challenges, with limited access to power and water, and a complex floor layout requiring multiple areas to be poured simultaneously while maintaining several wet edges.

The team selected Kelmore’s PrimeMore CS and LevelMore Flex&Fibre to ensure compatibility with the calcium sulphate substrate and to deliver a durable, high-quality finish.

The 100sqm area was cleaned thoroughly, including vacuuming to remove any residual dust and ensure optimal adhesion.

We applied PrimeMore CS directly to the substrate without dilution, using a medium pile roller for the main areas and brushes for edges. This created a consistent barrier layer, preventing direct interaction between the calcium sulphate screed and the cement-based smoothing compound, while also regulating surface porosity.

After approximately 60 minutes, the primer had dried sufficiently, allowing installation of the smoothing compound to begin.

Due to the size of the area and layout constraints, efficient mixing and application were critical:

LevelMore Flex&Fibre was mixed in batches of three bags at a time using our large buckets
• A controlled water dosing system ensured consistency across mixes
• Each batch was thoroughly blended before application to prevent inconsistencies

The 30-minute working time of the product proved particularly valuable, allowing the team to manage multiple wet edges across different areas of the property without compromising the finish.

Application tools included a CAM rake and aeration roller, enabling even distribution and removal of air within the compound. The primed surface also contributed to improved workability and consistency during installation.

Despite the logistical challenges, clear coordination and a structured approach allowed the installation to proceed efficiently across all areas.

The finished results: The completed floor achieved a smooth, uniform finish across the entire 100sqm area, meeting and exceeding SR1 standards.

The final surface required no additional feathering or remedial work, providing a strong and reliable base for subsequent floor finishes.

Feedback from both the client and other trades on site was highly positive, with particular recognition of the finish quality and overall standard of workmanship.

“Absolutely fantastic products with consistent performance throughout. This is a company that not only cares about their products but also supports the installer on the ground. For projects where quality and dependability are essential, this is a solution we would confidently recommend.” – Carters Prestige Ltd
